"Early Morning"

By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

It was either in 1992 or 1993 when I remembered seeing this scenery when George (my husband) and I were traveling in the eastern part of Tennessee.  We were immensely enjoying our vacation and were ready to travel back to Mobile, Alabama where we were then lived during that time.  Both George and I loved (and still love) traveling to the mountainous areas and towns.  Plus, we also loved (and still love) looking at log cabins and hopefully dream of living in one  located by the lake within several years soon.

     "Harnessed"

         By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

Try to imagine of what it feels like to see or maybe be a man (or woman) wearing an orthodontic headgear while he (or she) is posing by that special pet horse while wearing an equine harness at the same time. Well either way, it does take much courage and quirkiness for that person who is wearing the orthodontic headgear in public - especially for posing before going out on a horse-riding venture with friends for that day.  I also put the horse's surprised facial expression to see his owner who is also wearing a harness.  For some time I wanted to see or paint a picture of somebody with a mouthful of orthodontic braces who is wearing a headgear and posing by his or her horse wearing an equine harness.  Voila!  I can now say that I see this particular scenery even though I have painted it myself.

Since my preteen years, I admit about my fascination about seeing people who are very brave enough to wear that orthodontic headgear due to their need of having their teeth corrected.  Although, I never went through all of the experiences of wearing a mouth full of braces - leave alone a headgear, I wore retainers which were known as "Orthodontic Appliances" in the past.  However, if I were like that young lady who wore that orthodontic headgear in this painting,  it would not be unusual if I did that same thing while standing by a horse wearing a harness.

"Double Dipper"

"Double Dipper"

By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

Whenever I see a "Double Dipper" type of ice cream cone, I usually think about two things when I want to order one of these types of cones.  On "one occasion" is that I would want to eat ice cream so badly that I want to consume various flavors, and the "other occasion" is for me to share it with my husband while enjoying ourselves during our "out on the town" event.  In this painting, I decided to choose the "other occasion" because I want to show about how it is fun to share a special occasion of eating ice cream together as a treat - especially when it comes with using a "double dipper" cone.  Oh by the way and before I forget, those two flavors are "Deeply Chocolate" and "Vanilla With Almond Crunch".

"Open field Near Dawn Circle"

By Mary C. Aikens, Artist

This is an overlooked place that has been seemingly tucked away in the Hidden Valley Community in the northeastern part of Charlotte, North Carolina.  For some odd reason why I call this painting as "Open Field Near Dawn Circle is because that there is an overgrown driveway that leads to that particular field past the old oak tree up to an old house. However, I never had the bravery to enter onto that property believing that I will be paying for the consequences in one form or the other.

"A Piece Of Heaven"

"A Piece Of Heaven"

By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

It was at least ten years ago when I painted this painting based on my memory of this particular
scenery that my husband and I saw on our way to a church where he used to play the piano.  This place is taken near Bessemer City located in the western part of Gaston County, North Carolina. This scenery is on the left hand side of Edgewood Road where is almost a mile past the Exit #13 entrance ramp.  Seeing those country scenes give me a sentimental feeling of those "Olden Days of Yore"..

"Amusing Cups"

"Amusing Cups"

By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

Here is a throwback moment that I want to take you back sometimes around fifteen to twenty years ago when I painted this whimsical painting called "Amusing Cups".   I was (and still am) so much into the scenes of amusement rides and parks.  This picture reminds me of one of my most favorite rides - cup rides, and what is one song that I remember hearing during this particular song while I wars hearing while riding in one of those cups was "Never My Love" by The Association.  For some reason, I thought what an appropriate match - that song and riding in one of the cup rides during the same time.   When I was painting this part of my memory, I started singing "Never My Love".

"Leader Of The Pack"

By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

Here is the group of us lunch buddies who really enjoy meeting
and eating - especially after church on Sundays.  Although, this picture may look as though we were dressed in our Saturday attire rather than our Sunday-styled of dress.  I love to paint of being with people who really enjoy life.  Plus, these people (us included) are pictured as walking from an Italian restaurant where we enjoyed eating our lunch to going with our fearless and confident leader to a coffee shop for our dessert and maybe, some coffee.

I started to paint for this challenge, "The Crowd Of People Challenge" which was dated on Saturday, August 22, 2015.  However, there were so many things and events that came up that caused my to put it aside until recently when I decided to repaint and complete it.  Voila!   This painting does bring back many fond recent memories that I love to capture with enjoying times with friends.

"Rockin' & Rollin'"

"Rockin' & Rollin'"
By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

This is such a cute and catchy title that I named this painting because of  my making a pun with some items that relate to each other while one piece had nothing in common...  For example, I saw this furry, rocking, hobby horse in one setting, and then I saw this rock-cola that I remembered seeing in another shop.  Plus, I added the drum and cymbal set along with an old Beatles poster and used my artistic ability to make the whole picture pop for the whole concept in this painting.

"Artichokes: Section & Whole"

"Artichokes: Section & Whole"

By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

For some time, I thought that the sound of that vegetable's name "Artichokes" will not have a good sound.  It is because of the word, "choke" and "hearts" sounded rather scary or unappetizing. It was until I had a chicken and rice casserole that included chopped artichoke hearts in its recipe.  Yum Yum! Those artichoke hearts do add pop in that and other casseroles.  At one time, I did buy some fresh artichokes that were on a reduced sale, however; I did not do so well with them.  It will be later when I will try them again.  Whenever I buy artichoke hearts in a jar, I would normally call that a "splurge"

"Driving That Titleist"

By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

There is something about golf  that fascinates me. It is mainly because it is known as a game where many men (and women) go out there to socialize, network, and simply have an enjoyable time with each other while taking their turns putting that little dimpled ball around the course.  Plus, that little dimpled ball constantly gets knocked around in order to wind up in each hole for those rounds.

Speaking of  driving a golf ball, I once saw a bumper sticker on a car that said, "I much rather drive a Titleist".  Yes, it got my attention because I never heard of a car named a Titleist.  It was actually a golfing term meaning "driving" while teeing off the first ball for each hole.  Plus, Titleist is one of the top and very expensive brands of golf equipment (drivers and putters), balls, and etc...

"Knives & Strop"

By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

This is that time of the year when the "Showcase Of Woodcarvings" will be here in Charlotte, North Caroline.  Now, it is time for me to start sharpening up my knives for that event.  Aha!  I came across a Daily Paintworks Painting Challenge that was posted on February 13, 2016 called "Handy Tool Challenge" by Carol Marine.   What a nice and subtle reminder!  These knives were given to me from a fellow woodcarver who is now on an inactive membership status, and I purchased that strop kit about a year or so ago during one of the Showcase Of Woodcarvers.

"Love"

"Love"

By: Mary C. Aikens

Love is always in the air, especially around Valentine's Day.  This particular painting will make an ideal gift for that particular sweetheart for Valentine's Day.   Here is a unique way how to write that word "LOVE"  out this way in an artistic style.  This "LOVE" sign has the letter "O" in a heart-shaped style. which has been an inspiration to me by my husband by his writing "L<3VE" to me in numerous cards and notes to me as well his doodling.

* This particular art-sign is different from the other sign pieces in this shop mainly because
it is actually a framed painting.
*  There are both highlights as well shadowing on the letters.
*  This painting was done in acrylic and Mixed-Media on hardboard.
*  The picture frame was done in acrylic on yellow pine.
*  Measurements: (Picture)  16" W X 12" H x 1/8" T
                                  (Frame)   16" W X 12 - Hole for for this picture

"Scream for Ice Cream"

"Scream For Ice Cream"

By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

During my childhood, I remember my father often quoted this particular slogan that he heard on the radio during his youth: "I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream at People's Ice Cream Parlor".  From time to time, I still hear this particular line when I am either watching TV or on the radio which I find it odd. There was a time when I was eating ice cream very religiously to the point that I have been inspired to make a sign with this slogan that surrounds that picture of ice cream on a cone.

This sign is a combination of a wood relief and filigree that is hung by a rope from the top.  Then, I painted it in patriotic colors that are basically found in our American flag which also resembles the Fourth of July, one of my most favorite holidays.  Here in the Southeastern part of the United States of America, ice cream is considered as a treat mainly during warmer weather. However, I one of many people, especially to the who live in the North love eating it all year long.

"Lookin' Out My Back Door"

By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

It snowed last weekend in the Eastern part of the United States - especially in the Carolinas.  This particular snow storm was known as "Snow Storm of 2016".  Both my husband and I live in the northeastern part of Charlotte, North Carolina where we received about three inches.  Like any other times when we received snow, I tend to take pictures of snow scenes for any painting ideas.  It was earlier on that Saturday morning, when I took out a left-over waffle, crumbled it on the snow, saw those birds landing on the snow, and took pictures of them eating those crumbs.

Fast-forward a week later when there was warmer weather with the highest degrees were in the upper 50's.  I decided to pick a photograph that I took a week earlier and started to sketch it.  Aha! The title of that song "Lookin' Out My Back Door" (sung by Credence Clearwater back in 1970) came to my mind when I was making a sketch of the scenery that I photographed a week earlier.

In this painting, there was the time when the snow was in its waning period due to the sun's reappearance started clearing the skies.  It was very windy that day which was the reason why the tarp which was used to cover the fire wood was half-way blown off of the patio table, several Sycamore balls were blown onto the ground, patio, and table; and not to forget, I remembered seeing a strong gust of wind blew off any of the left over snow off from the trees. As I was finishing up sketching that scenery for this painting, I still had that same song, "Looking Out My Back Door"  still playing in my mind.

"Five Flavors Of Nik.L.Nip"

By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

Do you remember those days when there were many packages of  Nik.LNip were on the candy racks at many dime stores around the 1960's and 1970's?  I do!  Those tiny bottles of sweet, flavored,
sugar water were such a neat idea at that time. However, that fluid in each bottle tasted so sweet and funky at the same time, but I enjoyed them anyway. Plus, those wax bottles were also meant to be chewed as though they were gum.  Sometimes, I chewed those wax bottles, and other times, I saved them after I washed out the juice residue from them for times when I played with my dolls. There were other ideas that I heard from what various people said that they used those tiny wax bottles for other things such as candle-making, to put on orthodontic braces, and etc...

It was around New Years Day of 2016 when I saw this posting on FaceBook about Nik.L.Nip and wondered if anybody remembered these tiny juice-filled bottles during their childhood.  Yes, I certainly remembered them, re-posted that particular post, and was inspired to paint a picture of these tiny juice-filled bottles. Within a few days later, I painted the first and original painting on this subject is called "Nik.L.Nip" with those Nik.LNip "juices". (Please see that original painting at the bottom of this page.)  Needless to say, I was not really pleased with the results of  that "tested-and-tried" type of painting because the colors started to fade during its drying stage.  On the next day, I started on the second painting that I painted in watercolor called "Five Flavors Of  Nik.L.Nip" impressed me very much because of the stronger and more durable colors over the original one. Now, I realize the importance of sticking with traditional art materials when it comes to paint a painting for the most part considering with some exceptions at times.

"January Sunset"

Written by: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

This was a similar scene that I recorded in the memory part of my mind while I was driving on the way to church located in the Uptown part of Charlotte, NC for the first Wednesday night supper and program of 2016.  During our way to church that late afternoon, I mentioned about this sunset to my husband who was the passenger that time.  I love looking at sunsets and was wondering how to do a Winter type of sunset.

Later, it dawned on me that this will be a very appropriate subject to "The Pantone 2016 Challenge" painting challenge that Daily Paintworks for the week that Saturday, January 2, 2016 starts off for the week ahead. This particular painting challenge has not only one but two colors of 2016 which are "Rose Quartz" (a pale, pastel type of pink) and "Serenity" (a pale, Periwinkle type of blue).  For some odd reason, I decided to paint this picture in an abstract painting style.  I can really say that I really went to "town" on this particular painting and like it, too!

A New Art Design For Sweet Pumpkin Gallery on Blogger

"Sweet Pumpkin Gallery"

Do you see something that is different about this pumpkin?  It is heart-shaped!  The reason why I am
calling this Blogger wall "Sweet Pumpkin Gallery" is because I call my husband "Sweet pumpkin".
Imagine what it is like to see a heart-shaped pumpkin - very different...    That is is what I like about this particular Blogger gallery.  It's one-of-a-kind , sweet, and different just like my artwork and that very special man in my life.

"Magnolia Tea Cup"

"Magnolia Tea Cup"

By: Mary C. Aikens, Artist

This is an Impressionist-styled painting that I have pictured about a ceramic cup that came from a set that my husband gave me for Christmas one year. Plus, I want to portray a time that was almost twenty years ago on one Saturday afternoon when my husband and I were at home while we were enjoying our orange spiced tea with some Pecan Sandies and few pecan halves. Then, I decided to save one cookie, a couple of pecan halves, and some of that orange spiced tea for this picture. Now, I can say, "What a way to recapture some very fond memories!".
